Iconic WWII Zippo lighter with black crackle finish as coveted by all GI's. This is the three barrel hinge type which was produced as of 1943. During the war Zippo only produced lighter for the US Army (see photo of advertisement). These were made of steel with a black crackle finish to prevend rust. This finish usually wore off. It has the chimney with 14 holes. Typically the lighter has a rounded top and bottom because of which it can't stand up. The spring works well and the lid closes properly. The markings on the bottom of the case are visible because the black finish has worn off. The markings on the insert are clear. Now for the best news, the lighter still works! The flint has been replaced by a new Zippo flint as the old one was deteriorated. After the Zippo lighter fluid was added to the cotton the lighter lit up like a christmas candle. Original Zippo lighters are becoming increasingly difficult to find. One that actually works is even rarer. A 'must have' for the WWII US collection and also perfect for 'use in the field'. Very good condition.
