Iconic WWII Zippo lighter with black crackle finish as coveted by all GI's. This is the four barrel hinge type which was produced until 1942. During the war Zippo only produced lighter for the US Army (see photo of advertisement). These were made of steel with a black crackle finish to prevend rust. This finish usually wore off. It has the chimney with 14 holes. Typically the lighter has a rounded top and bottom because of which it can't stand up. The markings on the bottom of the case and insert are hard to read because they are worn away and partially covered by rust. The case was stripped of its black crackle finish and is adorned with brass crossed rifles and US monogram, a unique and personal touch. The pin theat kept the lid at the hinge seems to have been lost at some point and was replaced by a tiny nail. Because of this one barrel had been damaged and the lid not longer fully closes. The lighter has not been cleaned or checked for functionality. It may function but that is up to the new owner to decide.
Original Zippo lighters have become increasingly difficult to find, especially the early production four barrel hinge type. One with additional insignia is even rarer. A 'must have' for the WWII US collection. This is an item of the 1944Supply.com shop collection. Very good condition.
