Iconic WWII Zippo lighter with black crackle finish as coveted by all GI's. This is the four barrel hinge type which was produced until 1942. During the war Zippo only produced lighter for the US Army (see photo of advertisement). These were made of steel with a black crackle finish to prevend rust. This finish usually wore off. It has the chimney with 14 holes. Typically the lighter has a rounded top and bottom because of which it can't stand up. The spring works well and the lid closes properly. The markings on the bottom of the case are hard to read because of the finish. The insert has no markings which is typical for the early type Zippo. It is however engraved with 1st LT ANC N-729400 US ARMY ENGLAND (and LONDON?). It seems a name above has been ground off. The case is adorned with a Major's insignia and Caduceus with capital D (for Dentist), a unique and personal touch. The lighter has not been cleaned or checked for functionality. It may function but that is up to the new owner to decide.
Original Zippo lighters have become increasingly difficult to find, especially the early production four barrel hinge type and this nice. One with additional insignia and research potential is even rarer. A 'must have' for the WWII US collection. This is an item of the 1944Supply.com shop collection. Very good condition.
